1) What are the factors in a JSP page that would affect its performance drastically. I have a jsp that uses scripting and takes a while to process.

2) Does using scripting as opposed to EL hinder the performance of the page?

Thanks.

By "scripting", I assume you mean scriptlets.

The answer is no.
Your JSPs get compiled into servlet code before being interpreted by the container. Any difference between scriptlets and JSTL/EL would be negligible.

The reasons to move away from scriptlets have more to do with maintainability than with performance.
