Defining number of hits is probably the hardest part of your task.
Do you mean, number of unique visitors to the site as a whole, number of HTTP requests made to your site, number of visits to each page?
For me, the best way to do this is to turn access logging on and occasionally run the logs through one of the many web traffic analyzers like Webalizer.
This technique will give you an amazing amount of detail in easy to read graphs, and pie charts as well as give you top 10 type statistics for thinks like 404 errors, user location, referer (referrer) information, etc..
