I have a simple main method that runs to connect to a MYSQL database. The code compiles but it tells me that the database connection isn't established.

However, if I remove the GUI code like so . ..

The code compiles, runs and says the connection is established. Why is this?

Can you show us the exact error messages?

System.err.println ("Cannot connect to database server");

That's what gets printed out.

Steve, you can't see much with this. You should be printing out the stacktrace of the exception. What you would probably see is the exception name & its hash code.

Richard, your original code in the catch-block is swallowing up the exception. Thats not going to help you in troubleshooting nor debugging. Do this instead.

Of course ideally you should be using a logger to log instead of System.err.println.

OK. The error tells what's wrong:
Your MySQL driver jar is not on the classpath when you run your GUI version of the program.

Can't believe you told me that.

My lecturer has been telling me it was a problem with my code for a week now.
