How do I throw an exception inside an ejb finder if it returns null ?

What do you mean by "it returns null"? I'm assuming that you're talking about an BMP entity bean's ejbFindXXX(...) method so if the find operation logically fails, you should just throw a javax.ejb.FinderException.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
