In starting JBoss 3.2.5 to run, the documentation (startguide.pdf, chapter 3) tells me to also download JSTL jar files :

"...at http://jakarta.apache.org/taglibs/doc/standard-doc/intro.html.
You will need to copy the JSTL JAR files over in a
moment, so make sure to download the libraries and keep them available."

There must be 100 files over multiple cascaded references that deal with this vague concept JSTL. Do the JBoss people only need a select few of these files or all (!) of them? Can I start with just a limited number of them?

They have not given you a very good link

Try at the Standard Taglib Dowloads. Download 1.1.2.tar.gz or 1.1.2.zip, extract the content, and get both jstl.jar and standard.jar from the lib directory.

You'll need to put them in the lib directory of your application, or in JBoss's common lib directory. There's also something that you should be aware of : http://faq.javaranch.com/view?JstlTagLibDefinitions
