AWT or Swing first

Swing classes inherit from AWT classes, correct?
Should one start with Swing or learn the basic AWT functionality first? One book I read "Java Application Strategies for the AS/400" took some time with the AWT classes and stated that knowledge can be built upon, when you start to study Swing.
As with most people, time is a precious commodity. Which path is recommended, take the time to learn AWT or jump right into Swing?

If you are a real beginning to all this I would check out Steven Gutz's "Up to Speed with Swing". Its very quick and doesn't give you any detailed or advanced knowledge, but its true to its title.

I would learn AWT first and then proceed to learn Swing.

I agree with David.
AWT is easy to learn and then you can add the swing functionality to AWT.

Can someone answer this for me - why do I need to learn AWT first to learn swing ? Are they really that closely related ?

You don't. That might have been good advice in 2001 (you did notice the date of the thread, right?) but it isn't good advice now.
