Does anyone know of a better way to update the contents of a Jtable?

That's. . . interesting.
You should spend some time with the Java Tutorial page on How to Use Tables. There's the table then there's the table model. You don't mess with the table itself once it's displayed. You make changes to the table model and use events to let the table know things have changed.
