Difference between AWT and swings

Please tell me the differences between the two and why swings are called as light weight components while AWT is called as heavy weight component.

A lightweight component is one that does not have an associated native screen resource (called a peer), a heavywight component is one does have its own natove screen resource. See this for more information.
