If you set up camp overnight and then travel one mile south, one mile east ,then one mile north. Where do you need to have set up camp to use this strategy in order to make sure that you are back at camp in the morning?

North pole, because you can't 'travel one mile south' from South pole! :

Yeah , I left the bear out as the bear was a bit of a red herring. A bear back-trekking to destroy a camp is more likely to be a mean nasty brown bear. Until you realise there are only Polar bears (white) at the NP.I was more intrigued by the fact he'd end up at base camp than the colour of bears.

If I changed the question to "the hunter walked 100 miles south , then flew 100 miles east in 1 hr then flew 100 miles north in 1 hr , how far would he be from his camp at the North Pole."
I think this re-phrased question is complete.
regards

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
