question related to servlet and IP address and how to run servlet which is not in LAN

hi friends i am new to java servlet programming
friends i have develop one servlet on my machine
and try to run my applcation of sevlet from my friends machine using my IP address where both machine are in LAN

normally in order to run servlet we type in following way

http://localhost:8080/..... <-- this is file structure

suppose my IP address is 172.16.2.44:8080

then my question is how to run my applcation from machine which is not in a LAN

The machine you are using to access the application must be connected in some way to your server. Can you ping the server from this machine?
