Have you read up on Serializable, ObjectInputStream, ObjectOutputStream? Those will give you good details on how it all works.

You can implement the Serializable interface to indicate an object is willing to be serialized. Once an object is serializable you can use the transient keyword to indicate a variable is not to be serialized as part of the object.

Serealization is the process of reading and writing an object to a stream. For an introduction to how this works, check the Serialization Tutorial from Sun.
