Yeah - I went to visit relatives in Perth, Western Australia and my cousin took me on a geocaching trip. We used his HUGE 4X4 and went miles offroad into the bush, up & down some slopes I thought were impassable and sometimes in rivers which were almost up to the driver's door. He even let me have a drive at it which was pretty cool!
The cache was under a waterfall about 8 miles offroad - we found it and I left a wee shamrock badge and signed the book. The GPS handhelds we had were'nt the most expensive but were accurate to within about 10 or 15 feet.
Not as geeky as it sounds; I had a great day out and I'd recommend it to anyone.

So why didn't you visit?
The only GPS I have access to is attached to a friend's boat and they don't want to drive it into the hills.

Geocaching is very cool.
"geek outdoor activity" - isn't that an oxymoron?

I've got an etrex Venture (one of the perks of working at Eastern Mountain Sports)... but haven't gone geo-caching yet.
There's a couple locations listed on geocaching.com near my place... maybe I'll get a token from one there and put it in a cache near my dad's house in Salt Lake when I go out next month...

and here I was thinking that 'outside activity' referred to getting from home to work and back.

Sounds like a nice badge.
Might have to go pick it up...

That'd be pretty cool... I'll have a look and see if I can remember the URL of the geocache location.
I take it you're from Perth then? I didn't stay there very long (I was trying to see as much of Oz as I could in 3 and a half weeks) but I thought Perth was a lovely city, if a bit isolated. Very clean and incredibly friendly people living there. I was also in Fremantle which reminded me a lot of places here (Ireland) - I did the nighttime gaol tour which was superb.
Also did the ferry ride down the river from Perth -> Fremantle, visited the aquarium and had a proper Aussie barbie in my cousin's back yard. I visited an animal sanctuary in the hills outside Perth and the (famous?) graveyard that has the 'roos running wild in it.
All in all a lot to fit in to 4 days but well worth it. Australia's a wonderful place; pity I'm a bit old to think about moving out for good...

This isn't strictly geocaching, but its a great project and interesting to read the stories.
"The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. "
Degree Confluence Project
If your internet connection is up to it check out the detailed versions of the world maps.

I'd like that.
I'm seriously thinking of rustling up a hand-held and seeing if a group of friends want to spend a day searching.
I'd like to show them the badge a complete stranger left behind for me
ps Glad you enjoyed your stay!

This geocaching thing looks pretty cool. Any recommendations for a GPS unit from you folks who have gotten into it. Is the Garmin Legend a good one for this?

I got the etrex yellow GPS for about $70.
The fancier ones have lots of gadgetry that sounds cool, but that I think I would probably not use. Kinda like getting a phone with a thousand features. I usually never even read the instructions for the features any more. I just pick it up and dial.
