Hi Everybody,

Are there any methods(or ways) in Java that gives same functionality same as 'DECODE' function in Oracle.

Eg : In Oracle
DECODE(X,'A',1,'B',2,'C',3,4) function works like this:
If column X equals 'A' then it returns 1,if 'B' then 2 ,if 'C' then 3,if not any of the above then it returns 4.

I want the same functionality in Java also ,we hava already one provision for that like below

(X!=null)?Double.parseDouble(X):0;

but here we can give only one option.But i want the solution for multiple options.

Indeed - if / else, or a switch statement, or a lookup table - you can implement that using a java.util.Map in Java.

Here's a version that looks more like the Oracle function.
It requires Java 1.5 (because of the varargs feature).

Thanks for your solution.The second post is good since it is dynamic.

In the first post,you mentioned that Swith can be used but can we pass Strings as parameters to Switch?

No, you can't use a String as the parameter in a switch (...) statement. You can only use integer types and enums.

"R KO",

There aren't many rules that you need to worry about here on the Ranch, but one that we take very seriously regards the use of proper names. Please take a look at the JavaRanch Naming Policy and adjust your display name to match it.

In particular, your display name must be a first and a last name separated by a space character, and must not be obviously fictitious.

Thanks!
