how do i implement this hash function to read upper, lower case code and numbers too...this is what i have so far:

private int hash(String word)
{
int hashValue = 0;
for(int i = 0; i < word.length(); i++)
hashValue = ((hashValue << 5) + (word.charAt(i)-'a')) % M;

return hashValue;

}

this is what i have so far...but i'm not sure/pretty sure it's not right.
