By "first level," do you mean the associate exam (SCJA) or the programmer exam (SCJP)?

We have a SCJA forum with a SCJA FAQ, and a SCJP forum with a SCJP FAQ. The FAQs should get you headed in the right direction.

(Note that the SCJA exam is not required for the SCJP exam.)
