Join the hunt for meteorites

with BBC/Open University. Meteorites are fragments of space rocks that break up on hitting the Earth's atmosphere. More than 30 are thought to land on British soil every year but only 20 have ever been found.

If you do find them they are the oldest objects on Earth and are quite collectable and can change hands for thousands of pounds. They have huge scientific value too as they tell us about the formation of the solar system and the stars that lived and died before the solar system.

That piece of rock no bigger than an egg you thought your neighbour chucked over the fence....

Or alternatively, study wildlife in the garden.

A balcony or deep window sills in bay windows is sufficient excuse to have a garden.
Afraid I don't get penguins only robins and other small birds. A flock of green African parrots visited this year. It'll be a long while before penguins start migrating but with GW (global warming or the other GW) they might have to start learning to adapt soon.

What does one do if you run into a penguin in the high street ?
