Hi,
I recently had a chance to visit one shool using e-Learning system. All the kids have got Laptop. They are using educational programs which needs internet access. The bad thing is that, these kids are browsing porn sites and using google to find dirty images.
How can school stop this ugly thing? How much sites they can block? 10,100,1000? Kindly give some suggestion.

Bye,
Viki.

As far as I know, the ISP's can "filter" out bad sites, alternativly
you might install a filter in IE which removes the good from the bad
sites.

There are dozens of programs that filter content based on black/whitelists and keywords. One popular one is called "NetNanny". Any school which gives kids Internet access without either monitoring by a teacher (much preferred!) or blocking using something like NetNanny is, in my mind, criminally negligent.

From the point of view of a student, I think "criminally negligent" is a bit harsh... I mean, seriously, if a kid's really dying to see girly pictures, he can find his girly pictures without too much difficulty. My school has Bess, the internet protector deally, universally hated by all for blocking the most random sites at times, making researching at school next to impossible. Furthermore, the hacks to get around Bess are well known, for instance going to google image search and setting the language to another language (Hebrew was always a favorite), and Bess is confounded. This was NEVER used, however, to satisfy carnal desires, but to demonstrate the silliness of the system by setting the backrounds of all the library computers to... things the Victorians wouldn't have approved of. No one uses the school computers to get porn... it just doesn't make sense, they can just do it at home, or just about anywhere they feel like it. Of course, if a teacher sees someone at such a site, they should have the book dropped on them, but Bess is nonsense.

It is my opinion that internet porn is only as big of a problem as people make it into. If little Timmy sees dirty pictures, he's not going to turn into a sex-craved maniac, nor will he jump to the conclusion that women really are nothing more than objects.

If they are going through the school network the administrators can block sites before they get to the laptops. My employer does this, but I don't know what product they use or where they get the lists of sites to block. They block adult and hacker sites and very likely many other things I've never bumped into. It's important to learn from the other replies that nothing like this is perfect. You'll only slow down the unimaginative ones, but that might be a good step.

I have to admit, my suggestion is adult supervision.

The day computers can really replace parents or other adults in raising kids is the day we ought to quit having kids and let the computers take over.

Well said Warren. Adults should start taking responsibility over their kids.
At home that means parents not putting their kids behind the computer or TV alone and then complaining the kid sees things they don't want it to.
At school that means teachers actively working with the kids and not just telling them to "study chapter 10" while they go read a book or grade papers from some other group.

Blocking software as said is extremely limited.
All either blocks too many and/or too much (most block things they shouldn't while letting things pass you want blocked).
One extreme case (quite besides Bess mentioned) was NetNanny (I think it was) which turned out to block sites about social issues the company owners didn't agree with (including all information about some religions, homosexuality, etc.) as well as any site writing in a negative way about blocking software (and especially themselves).
Do you really want some anonymous person you don't even know his agenda of censoring what you can and cannot see?

But chances are more of Timmy becoming sex-maniac.

Its not that all smokers die because of lung cancer but yes most of them do.

Introducing things before one is ready can be dangerous. Allowing child to see nude images is something like feeding solid food to 3 months child, we know he is not ready for it right now.

What is the age of the little porn viewers?

Although I do not advocate porn in school, I dont think that it will turn the young boys into sex-crazed maniacs. Curiousity and Masterbation are healthy, right? Isnt it better to have the kids looking at porn and, taking care of themselves, rather than sleeping with young girls?

It is true that Net Nanny and other filters are helpful, however the children can find porn if they want to. Before there was internet, there were young boys reading magazines. The only thing I can see wrong here is that it should not be happening at school without strict punishment.

Yes, true. But question is about the source of information.

It can be told/taught in much better way rather than showing nude girls with tongue out OR to allow them to read "Human Digest" OR by showing blue films.
