What exactly is a classpath? I have no idea and I think it might be something important. Is it the place where java and javac are held or the dirctory where your class files are.

Yes, it's a list of places that the compiler or JRE should look for classes. Each place might be a folder, a JAR or ZIP file, a URL, etc. See Sun's Setting the Class Path for more details.

Telling the system where to find java and javac is what the PATH variable does. It's important to realize that PATH is a different variable than CLASSPATH (which Stan explained above).
