Hi

I have installed my jdk 1.5 and went to system properties because at the cmd i can type java to execute programs but I can't compile my code it tells me the compiler isn't recognized.

I am running XP Professional.

Terril,

Very likely the installer only set the path to the JRE, which is usually:

<root install path>\Java\<jdk-X.X.X>\jre\bin

You need to add the jdk executable path into your path, which is usually:

<root install path>\Java\<jdk-X.X.X>\bin

Welcome to JavaRanch!

Wirianto is correct. You probably need to update your PATH variable. For detailed instructions, see step 5 of Sun's installation instructions for Windows. Let us know if this solves the problem.

Thanks folks, I was going through some docs and I didn't know that everytime you make a change to the env variables you also need to open a new dos window to get the new changes.
