The first thing that's wrong is that JSF has no "if" tag. In fact, JSF's tags are display-oriented. Logic is supposed to go in the backing beans, not on the View.
Some people try to put logic in the View anyway by mixing JSF and JSTL. This often causes them problems.
The secret of how to be miserable is to constantly expect things are going to happen the way that they are "supposed" to happen.
You can have faith, which carries the understanding that you may be disappointed. Then there's being a willfully-blind idiot, which virtually guarantees it.
