Here is something that needs to be visited first.

Server Tomcat v5.5 Server at localhost was unable to start within 45 seconds.
If the server requires more time, try increasing the timeout in the server editor.

Are you using Eclipse IDE?

I have been trying hard to start the server, but it throws a pop up message window saying:

Its the problem with the Eclipse IDE and not with Tomcat

This question has been raised and answered many times in the IDEs forum. Like this one .

Now since out of Tomcat's scope, I am moving this one.

Hope this helps

What operating system are you using? Have you checked to see if the javaw process is running?

It appears that Eclipse uses the "default JRE" (as configured in Java > Installed JREs) to run Tomcat. What JRE is that on your system?

What output appears in the Console View?

Double click on the server from servers view and try to increase the server timeout value.

In both case 1 and case 2, the console clearly indicates that Tomcat was started, within 2 seconds even. Can you open a browser an access Tomcat?

I assume that this is the timeline of the events:

0 seconds: you click the start button
2 seconds: you see the text "org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina start INFO: Server startup in 1797 ms" in the console window
45 seconds: Eclipse pops up the "Starting Tomcat got an error" dialog

I suspect that there is something wrong in your Eclipse installation, I recommend reinstalling. (I occasionally run into weird issues with Eclipse where something that should work just doesn't and reinstalling seems to be the only way to solve the problem.)

My Comments : Increasing the timeout value in server window properties serves absolutely no purpose,i have tried this many many many times before.... any more solutions please.......

Grasping at straws....

You installed Tomcat in a directory where there are spaces in the path. Move it somewhere else. For example, I have Tomcat at d:\opt\java\Tomcat-5.5.27.

It looks like you are using a JRE and not a JDK. In addition, the JRE is in a directory with spaces. Try installing the latest 1.5 JDK and do not place it in Program Files! I have mine at c:\apps\java\jdk1.5.0_16. Then add this JDK to Eclipse and configure Eclipse to make this the default.

And just to double-check. when you downloaded Eclipse, you did grab the "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers" binary?

I was facing the same problem.

Installing new Eclipse IDE did not help.
Installing new Tomcat 5.5 did not help.
I changed address="192.168.1.1" to address="localhost" in server.xml & problem solved. (guessing ip binding does not allow debugging with eclipse)

If you double click on the server it opens up the server editor. there you can increase the timeout values. This worked for me. I am using eclipse 3.4 and tomcat 5.5

There are 4 steps to it, which are defined below:
Step 1: Download Tomcat plug-in.

Step 2: Close eclipse and place it inside plug-in folder of eclipse.

Step 3: open command prompt, go to eclipse home directory and type command eclipse -clean
e.g. E:\Eclipse3.2.1>eclipse -clean

Step 4: on eclipse, go to Preferences and then select Tomcat, select tomcat version you have installed and set the Tomcat home path.

Now the eclipse IDE is ready with Tomcat and we can start developing web applications/tomcat projects. We can start, stop and monitor Tomcat from eclipse.
