Not again...
Hurricane Rita

Hope and pray that this hurricane will not be a devastating storm..
Rita has winds of 165 mph (265 kph), putting it in the highest intensity level on the Saffir-Simpson scale, ....

Category 5 storms have winds of 156 mph or stronger. Such storms can blow down trees and shrubs, completely destroy mobile homes and cause major damage to lower floors of buildings near the coast.

Just spoke to close relatives in Houston,TX. Some low lying areas in Houston are also in evacuation order. As of 4PM CDT in Houston, it is taking about 5 hours to leave the city by road.

Expected landfall: Late friday night or saturday morning.

On a side note, my uncle who is a doctor was asked to work on both Friday and Saturday. He is from 'Houston memorial herman medical center'.

The hurricanes this year seem to be chasing the oil fields for some reason. Guess Detroit needs to be worried as the higher oil prices will hamper the sales of their babies, the gas-guzzling SUVs.

NASA has temporarily transferred the International Space Station control to Russia because of possible threat of Hurricane Rita.

Latest from Houston:
1. About 12-15 hours to reach Dallas(on I45).

Other possible routes I59(to nacogdoches) and then I30 west to Dallas. I heard even I59 is backedup.

Some folks are taking I10 to Port Arthur and then heading north to Lufkin, Nacogdoches and west to Dallas.

They have opened all lines to go in single direction.

The news this morning was saying that the evacuation traffic jam is one of the longest in human history, getting up to 120 miles long at one point. Its even causing traffic jams on the other side of the Atlantic - fears over increased petrol prices have caused a panicked run on some petrol stations in the UK.

According to this live camera site the traffic in houston is ok now. It is more backedup closer to Dallas due to a fire in the bus that was deadly.

my heart goes out 2 the people in the gulf coast..they r having a rough time this yr...lets hope this hurricane does not claim as many human lives as the prev one...v can always re-build cities but cannot get lost lives back..and lets hope that this time feds do not drop the ball as they did with Katrina

..Rita's Rains Breach Two New Orleans Levees
"Hurricane Rita's wind and rain breached two of New Orleans' battered levees Friday and sent water gushing into already-devastated neighborhoods just days after they had been pumped dry"

One doubt.. Why do they want to rebuild New Orleans..
AS this is a low -lying city, even a small storm also can cause floods. may be they should take all the people to a differt place and build a new city, which is safe to live.. Otherwise, every year, people have to suffer from these hurricanes- evacuations, traffic jams etc

Persistent weakening has brought Hurricane Rita down to a Category 3 storm. The eye is heading for a Saturday morning rendezvous with the upper Texas or southwest Louisiana Gulf Coast. - weather.com

Thank goodness it shrunk from the Category 5.
Let's continue our thoughts and prayers.
