All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

That's the lesson to learn from this movie

Horrible. The only worse abomination in translating a book to a movie was Lynch's Dune.

Direction gets most credit. Story is superb and Jack Nicholson's acting is great. He drives the movie alone. This is not a horror movie. It's a thriller. Truly thriller. A master piece. I always like to watch this kinda movie.

I have to agree. Kubrick and Nicholson should have been able to make this work, but it proved to be a misstep.

Why you people don't like? It tops IMDB chart so it's widely accepted as very good movie

What was the story of this movie about? I watched some of it when I was younger but then an objectionable scene came on and I was made to go inside. I remember it was painfully long and dragged on and on about a family trapped inside a hotel because of a snow storm. About the only highlight for me was the nude scene which provided some much needed and welcome relief as the plot progression was so uneventful in terms of satisfying my appetite for being scared s***less by graphic violence with generous amounts blood and gore which I expect when i watch these kind of movies.

It's all about Cabin Fever and its consequences.

Then they stupidly made a remake with that one actor from the tv series "Wings" boy was that a bigger mistake. But I did like the original movie.

I've been to the hotel where they shot the movie. It's a very cool place and it's in a very cool setting - but in real life the hotel isn't actually very far from town, maybe a couple of blocks.

King wasn't too happy with Kubrick's movie; that's why he himself did the "remake." The remake might have been truer to the book, but it unfortunately kinda sucked.

Yet I loved both movies.
In the case of The Shinning, I haven't read the novel so I can't compare, but Kubrick, like Lynch, is too personal to do a translation (although, thinking about it, most of his movies are adaptations/translations ).
I know that Dune is an "Epic fail" but I kind of admire Lynch's courage for trying at least.
On the other hand, "The Lord of the Rings" showed that great adaptations are possible.

Despite commercial success, reviews on this film were mixed, and it failed to become the blockbuster Kubrick had hoped for.

I saw it as a formulaic hack job with mediocre scripting, directing, and acting. The result was heavy-handed, unimaginative, predictable, and boring. But that's just my opinion. I'm glad other people liked it.

IMO Dune is a story for which CGI is an absolute necessity and that's one big area where the movie fails. 80's technology wasn't enough and even with the technology I have a feeling that Lynch would not have been able to use it effectively. Maybe Ridley Scott would have done it some justice.

There is some 5 or 6 or 9 hour Dune miniseries that we've been thinking about iTunes-ing - has anyone seen that?

So What did you like most in this film?

I didn't expect it to be like the book. I never expect a movie to be like a book. I like the atmosphere of the hotel, and I like Jack Nicholson too. I didn't like the remake as much as Kubrick's. The main character is nowhere as good as Jack. I'd like to watch it again.

Whether it's true or not, it says in Wikipedia that "King seems to have gained greater appreciation for Kubrick's The Shining over the years. Kubrick had described the original novel in an interview as not "literary," having its merits exclusively in the plot. This understandably may have upset King."

It's decent if you keep in mind that it's a made-for-TV mini-series.

There are some egregious liberties, but they're minor and can be ignored unless you're an overly-rabid fan of the books. (I'm just a rabid fan.)

It doesn't completely jettison the whole meaning of the Dune mythology the way that the Lynch movie did. ("Weirding modules"? give me a freaking break!!!)
