<%// Your JSP code here
String alertText = "This is a text for alert!";
%>
<script type="text/javascript">
alert('<%= alertText%>');
</script>
<%// Your JSP code can continue.. %>

If I go with this way for the line alert('<%= alertText%>'); it says "No variable or field found at this location.
