Hi friends, How you're doing.

In this information era, you can almost get what you want in the Internet. The IT resources as well as the free tutorials are countless.

The question is., why you still buy IT books ?

Here's my reasons :

  • The book is very likely written carefully and straight-forward from chapter to chapter.
  • The book is more trusted because of the author's reputation
  • Personally, I enjoy reading book. Reading is one of my hobby
  • When it comes to coding, I read the book while doing coding on my laptop which is easier to do when reading code in the laptop's web browser and coding it on the same laptop

  • How about yours ? Please share your experience here, thank you for reading my thread;

    Thanks

    I prefer book,
It's not convenient to sit and read in front of computer all time. You won't believe but I can finish the book faster than the digital material.

Most tutorials only go so far, whereas books generally cover more advanced topics as well. And they bundle it all in one place - no need to hunt around for online resources, and trying to get code snippets from various places to run and work together. At a price of often no more than $60, it doesn't take a lot of time searching the net to make buying the book worth my money. Trawling the web for information is only free for someone who values his/her time at nothing.

The book is more trusted because of the author's reputation

I agree in principal, but there are bad books and bad authors out there. Reader beware :-)

I bought a few electronic books from O'Reilly. There are pros and cons compared to a real paper book.

An electronic book doesn't take up physical space and weight, so it's really easy to take with you on a laptop. It's also easy to search in an electronic book - just type in what you're searching for and the computer does it for you. For reference books in which you need to lookup things often, an electronic book is good. On the other hand, reading a whole book from the screen is more tiring for the eyes. A real paper book is much nicer and easier if you want to read the whole book. And a paper book ofcourse doesn't require batteries...

Yes indeed. Browsing in the Internet wastes my time (I prefer to play web-based online games ). By paying some money for the book, it helps me so much.

I feel that book is good if you have enough time to learn technology completely.
But in this rapidly changing technology world, by the time you finish J2EE, there is JEE.

Here internet comes handy and good for quick start. Ctrl+F is nice feature in digital books (faster than index).
Net material and digital books saves lot of time and money.

I buy books that are not available on net and really worth to invest money.
From last eight years I bought only 2 books, SCJP-MIE and then Mastering EJB- Ed Roman both were worth investing money.

Mastering EJB I read 50% on print and 50% on my system.

Other technologies like Struts, hibernate, spring, WLS, glassfish, axis, design patterns, UML etc. I never felt to buy book.
Google is good enough to save money and time. It provides me quick links to blog /tutorial etc for information, which I am looking for.

I think when we are still the beginner in a certain topic, we should buy the book. When we already have a solid skill, we can continue buy the advance book or browsing in the Internet as well as joining a good forum like this forum.
