He has just been voted the best player in the World Cup:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/5154248.stm

Watching him walk off the pitch when he was sent off was sad - no excuses for head-butt, but he was provoked, and some reports suggest that he received racist comments about his algerian roots and comments over this mother.

Still a great player though.

He should have been the "bigger man".. but he's nevertheless a great player. Congratulations Zidane..

His popularity cannot be taken for granted. He is one of the greatest player.
He played well in the world cup especially against Brazil, delivered when needed.

Sad to know he is retiring...

The people with whom I watched the final judged in a very harsh way about Zidane. Though I can't imagine any reason for such a head butt, I concede that I don't know how it feels to play in such a final. But he should try to explain it.

Last year I worked with a guy who had chosen Thai boxing as his sport. And if I understood it correctly, head butt is only alowed in free fights and not in Thay (using elbow and knee is allowed in Thai).
So even in those fighting sports head butt is only allowed in most rule-less flavour.
Nothing light.

Meterazzi was very quite when he was asked what he said to Zidane after the match, and one of the assistant referees made an illegal approach in the sending off - contrary to FIFA regulations.

I think Zidane realised what he had done moments later when it all sunk in:

True, head butts arn't allowed in full contact martial art competitions (or mixed martial art competitions, for that matter). However, I'd rather take a hit from a head butt to the chest than a knee to the face. Zidane should have ignored Meterazzi - but had Meterazzi been playing football instead of being on Zidane's "back" all through the match this wouldn't have happend, and Zidane would have gotten a good "farewell" to the football world.

Zidane lost a point in my book because of the incident, Meterazzi on the other hand lost many more.

Strange logic.. I know.

I'll always remember Zidane for the great moments he gave us, all the emotion.

Some reports say that Zidane may lose the golden ball.
