Here in S'pore, I am amazed at these people's phenomenal typing speed. Even kids have such nimble fingers, I just saw one kid on my way to office. She sent a message in record time - may be 4 or 5 secs. I unashamedly watched her intently, she even corrected the number to which the sms was sent. That to me is amazing! Personally I am very slow and dont send sms unless absolutely required.

Typing speed depends upon how oftern you type SMS and since how long you are doing it.

What's the bet that a lot of these fast text typers will have RSI or arthritis in their fingers within 20 years?

True, and I am of the opinion that it is worth talking rather sending those messages. But some are obsessed, one of my cousins keeps forwarding jokes and such stuff just like email fwds. I feel awareness of using these things can only change these habits.

Depends upon the mobile set as well. When required,I'm quick to type and send text while driving.

That's the problem with kids who don't have to pay for their own mobile phone. When they do they'll learn in a few days or weeks the cost of their habbit and either meet the long arm of the law when they start financing it or limit themselves.

Not all service providers charge you for a sms. I send around ten a day max and i dont consider myself fast either. If you can learn to use the dictionary that helps speed four fold

Its beyond me why some parents pay their children's phone bill. One argument I've heard is that it means they are always contactable, but I've seen several packages which allow one free "emergency" call to be made to a specific number in any given time period even if the phone is out of credit.

Instead of doing something like that, it seems many parents are paying loads of money every month to let their kids send texts to each other. Perhaps not paying for them would be better, and would persuade the kids to go out and get a job if they want to spend ages on the phone. Its shocking how young some of these kids are as well - why does a ten year old need to take a phone to school?

Sending text messages is also having a bad effect on spelling. I know I can hardly talk as I have to spell check everything, but there are now increasing number of people who don't understand the difference between you're and your because they spell both ur.

In India, sms is mostly free, mainly targeted at the younger generation. Service providers rush to give offers every month.

Some people I have seen will keep typing even when they keep talking and it is kind of irritating. The ringtone associated with incoming sms is another irritant. It keeps sounding every 10-15 secs much to the amusement of the receiver...

I hear they have a thing called predictive texting on some more modern phones. Helps avoid spolling errors.

no no Marcus is using keyboard without predictive texting

I don't like idea of sending sms with lot of text in it...I think sms are good for short and sweet notification, sort of synch messages, or for handshake protocol style messages (ACTYYR, YCETC..etc )

SMS is *not* free in India, at least it hasn't been so for last several years for my state. I think operators offer few free SMS (say 100 or so) when you get a new card, later you have to pay for SMS.

Yea. That is correct. They have'nt been free except for Reliance I suppose who did offer unlimited free sms when they were new in the market.

I dont like this sms idea. Its easy and better to talk.

I have seen many operators offering free SMS . It depends on your subscription plan. Few operators offers unlimited SMS and charge Rs 1.00 per day irrespective of whether you use it or not. Few offers 100 SMS free per month & charge you after that.

All depends on what you call "free".
Many plans here give 100 or even 1000 "free" SMS messages if you only pay a certain amount extra on top of the normal rate for example.
Sadly, many people fall for it
