Mine keeps switching between the Beatles' White Album and the soundtrack to Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, with a little AC/DC thrown in to keep me awake. It's making me quite happy.

BTW, I know there are other MP3 players besides iPods, but I'm an Apple brat (my dad's worked there for 26 years).

At home: Only Tamil songs (conneted to Logic3 i-Station).
While travelling in car: Tamil, Hindi & English in random (connected to my car stereo through an iTrip)
At work (after 19:00): Mostly Mozart (earphones).

Susan McKeown, Johnny Cash, Cowboy Junkies, Garth Brooks, Enigma, and Gloria Estafan come to mind.
Some others as well, and room left for later.

I own a 6 gig iPod mini. I listen to John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, Cheryl Crow, Rush, John Mellencamp, U2, David Gilmour. I found this cool program that allows me to rip the audio track off a DVD and save it to my iPod. I ripped the audio off my U2 dvds (Elevation Tour 2001, U2 Go Home, and Vertigo 2005) It helps me through the long afternoons.

Speaking of which...

New iPods were just announced, including the rumored 8 GB nano! Unfortunately, the 8 GB model only comes in black, while the new 4 GB nanos are available in silver, green, blue, and pink -- all styled more like the retired iPod mini, with rounded edges and a matte aluminum finish. If the 8 GB were available in silver, I would buy it today. But in black, I think I'll wait and see.

(The completely re-styled shuffle is actually kind of cool too.)

Jeez, a little of everything from Abba to ZZ Top.

Though gotta admit that the biggest play counts go to: Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks, Eurythmics/Annie Lennox, Eagles, Journey, Pet Shop Boys and Elvis Costello.

I didn't buy one until they were available in black because I didn't want something that looks like a cheap bit of plastic (and don't want to announce to all the world "look, another iPod, see how kewl im").
One reason I immediately ditched the Apple earplugs and replaced them with some Sennheisers.

This is probably why Apple get most of their sales - just because iSomething is trendy. OK, so they do have a good interface, but in when buying an MP3 player I went for a Creative Zen Sleek. It was cheaper, it had a radio built into it and it played MP3s rather then a proprietary format. It may look a bit more clunky and be less intuitive to use, but the extra functionality and lower price made it a better option for me.

A pox on iTunes 7!

I down-loaded it last night and got all the lovely album art to go with my library.

In doing so I got to inspecting the library and saw many gaps that just needed to be filled (including Bowie, McLean, the 5th Dimension and others). So of course I had to buy them from the iTunes Music Store.

The spike in iTMS revenue will likely make the WSJ.

Probably will. That's always good.

My dad was joking that now that Steve Jobs is a major shareholder in Disney, maybe Disney will buy Apple and he can retire off the sale of his stock. My hope is that it'd make him a Disney employee so I can go to Disneyland for free!

Hmmm... But aren't most iPods you see today the black ones? Every since the first black nanos came out, that seems to be what all the kids have.

[Dave]: when buying an MP3 player I went for a Creative Zen Sleek. [...] it played MP3s rather then a proprietary format.

To be fair, an iPod is perfectly capable of playing MP3s, and iTunes is likewise quite able to create MP3s for you (e.g. from a disc). They do encourage the use of AAC in several ways:
  • All (as far as I know) music bought from the iTunes store is in AAC format
  • If you convert a CD, by default it will be converted as AAC. You can change the setting once to use MP3 instead, and this choice becomes the new default.
  • iTunes does not support converting AAC to MP3 or vice versa - you need some other software if you want to do that. (Unless they've added such capability recently, but so far, looks like no.)
  • As for what's on my iPod - um, lots of stuff. It's a 60 GB model, holds about a third of my collection at once. On the iPod I mostly favor classic and progressive rock, some alternative and pop. Lately the most frequently played are Queen, Rush, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, Coheed & Cambria, Toy Matinee / Keven Gilbert, Styx, Cat Stevens, Warren Zevon, Afro Celt Sound System, and KBCO Studio C collections.

I bought my wife a 60G ipod a few months ago -- so she could have all her CDs in one location. I guess it was a good idea at the time.

Today, 5000+ songs ripped into iTunes (and sync'ed with her iPod). About halfway through her collection, and little desire (energy) left to continue...

Most of her collection is Latin, and Disco. But she does have a huge collection of stuff in other genres too. She also have every Erasure CD released (no wait, that's me).

Actually, I know someone who stores all of his music in WAV format on his iPod. (It's a 60 GB.)

The vast majority of my music is in mp3 format. Only the iTMS purchased music is in aac and even those I have burned to discs so I could rip them back to mp3 at any time if I wanted.

And no, I can't hear the difference that all the audiophiles complain about.
