but it doesn't allow replying to very old threads .

I don't think the methods are overloaded sort methods either in Collections or Arrays classes.
The sentence that says those methods are overloaded should perhaps be removed.

I guess once we look up Arrays and Collections classes in the Java 6 API this becomes obvious.

Actually, all those methods are overloaded (not overridden.) The overridden reference is just a typo.
