Though I have't watched much english movies but some are:

1. The Terminal (first part is cool, second is okay).
2. Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey is always funny).
3. Repli Kate (sext too...).

Heard that Americal Pies are also good, waiting for CDs.

Suggest.

Jim Carrey is great.

It's funny how all the most famous americans are really comedians, especially the Canadians. I thought I knew it all, but actually found out last night that Phil Hartman was born in Brantford, Ontario.

Cheers!

i would recommend you the following

1. pink panther (steve martin)
2. bowfinger (steve martin)
3. sgt. bilko (steve martin)
4. gods must be crazy part 1 and 2
5. police academy (part 1,2 and 3. part 4-6 is crap)
6. ace ventura (jim carrey)
7. .... let me know if you need any more

Peter Sellers' movies are great.

I loved steve martin's version of the pink panther, and my friend recommended that the peter seller's version is more hilarious. I rented the movie but I found it rather boring (the jokes were too 1970ish, not according to my taste). generation gap, maybe?

[Frank]: Best British comedy, or best English-language comedy?

From the original post, it's clear they were not limiting the question to Britain or England. Apparently "English movie" is intended to mean "English-language movie".

Or maybe it's meant in a poetic sense -- as in Dante's Divine Comedy. Under that interpretation, virtually anything from Hollywood would qualify.

In the original post I'd say there were 3.5 comedies among the 4 movies listed (or more considering Pies as plural). The Terminal being the 0.5, for me. Or maybe 0.4. I liked it quite a lot, but it doesn't fit easily into such a classification. Subsequent posts have mostly talked about English-language comedies, and I think that was the intended track.

Well, for dark comedies, I tend to like movies like:

The Cable Guy
Envy
Election
Death to Smoochie (probably my favorite)

When I think of dark comedies I think of funny movies with twisted plot twists and characters.

Fight Club is a great movie and has funny moments, but I wouldn't call it a comedy. Same goes for 12 Monkeys. Has very funny moments with Brad PItt but not a comedy.

Well, it's a dark satire (like most of Palahniuk's work). The "funny moments" are not really part of this.

I like dark humor, especially when it's layered (buried) in irony. So some of these might not be considered "comedy" in a mainstream sense, but to quote (with appropriate layering) one of these films, "I know comedy"...
  • The American Astronaut (Cory McAbee, 2001)
  • The Saddest Music in the World (Guy Maddin, 2003)
  • Full Frontal (Steven Soderbergh, 2002)
  • Schizopolis (Steven Soderbergh, 1996)
  • Gray's Anatomy (Steven Soderbergh, 1996)*
  • Slacker (Richard Linklater, 1991)
  • My Dinner with Andre (Louis Malle, 1982)
  • Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964)
  • Fargo (Joel Coen, 1996)
  • True Stories (David Byrne, 1986)
  • After Hours (Martin Scorsese, 1985)
  • The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese, 1983)

  • * Note: Nick Broomfield's treatment of Monster in a Box is finally being re-released on DVD in November. I've heard Gray's monologue on CD, but I haven't seen the film yet.

    The Aristocrats.

I had to rent the video because I laughed so hard in the theater that I missed some of the good parts.

(NOT The Aristocats from Disney Studios.)

    pink panther (steve martin)

    sgt. bilko (steve martin)

Or for something ACTUALLY funny. Watch the originals

    Pink Panther - Peter Sellers
The Phil Silvers Show (aka Sgt Bilko) - Phil Silvers

How Steve Martin (who in his own right is quite funny) could allow himself to destroy such classics by recreating them but putting himself in the lead role is beyond me. The two Steve Martin versions made me angrier than any comedy film should.

I thought something simmilar about his Pink Panther remake, but refrained from posting my comments because I couldn't be sure I'd manage to do so without breaking the Be Nice rule

I'm calmer now; more time has passed since I watched it - stuck on a long haul flight so there was no escape. I am struggling to remember a worse film than Steve Martin's version of the Pink Panther. Its a shame, since he's made so many good movies. Peter Sellers must be spinning in his grave.

Isn't that an exaggeration? I agree that Forrest Gump was a terrible movie, but was it really the worst thing that could happen in the history of the world?

I recommend The Producers as a great comedy. (The original one that is, with Gene Wilder, Zero Mostel, and Dick Shawn.) The tastes in this thread seem to running a bit broad though, so maybe Blazing Saddles would be better? It depends which you like more: irony or farce ... although both movies definitely have great examples of both.

While you're at it, let's throw in Young Frankenstein. I liked both YF and The Producers (yes, the original) more than Blazing Saddles. I liked all three though.

For dark humor it has to be the film version of Catch-22, but its not British. For funny it has to be the "Life of Brian". Also, the "Comic Strip Presents " films, the best [IMHO] being "Bad News"..

And also I should mention: Red Dwarf, Father Ted, The Fast Show - but I'm not sure if the humor translates to places outside of the UK.

Have to agree with Peter Rooke - "Life of Brian" *HAS* to be the funniest movie ever made - I've watched it probably 50 times and still it has me in hysterics every time...

"Bad News" is also great comedy - but I havent seen it for decades so perhaps I'm remembering it with rose-tinted specs?
