Hi

I'm planning to purchase a PC and the a branded PC with the following configuration costs me Rs.50,000
-------------------------------------------------
Core 2 Duo E 6300 Processor
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM
160 GB HDD
16X DVD+/-RW with Dual Layer write capabilities
Intel Graphic Accelerator X3000
17'' Flat panel LCD monitor (Analog only)
Optical USB Mouse
USB Stereo speakers
Intel G965 Express Chipset
-------------------------------------------------

Having provided this info, can you let me know what might be the price if I go for an assembled system with the above configuration ?

I extensively use heavy applications and hence if you have suggestions please let me know.

If you can possibly afford it, don't go for the integrated graphics on the motherboard; it seriously impacts the performance of the machine in all applications (and especially graphics-intensive ones, of course.) If you do buy a machine with this chipset, make sure you get the very latest drivers from Intel; some available drivers for these all-in-one Intel motherboards (including ones you'd get directly from Microsoft) don't even support all of the chipset's graphics capabilities, so that your performance would suffer even more.

Here are the prices (approximate) from some googling:

Core 2 Duo E 6300 Processor: Rs 9000
1 GB DDR2 RAM: Rs 4000
160 GB HDD: Rs 2800
16X DVD+/-RW with Dual Layer write : Rs 2100
17'' Flat panel LCD: Rs 10000
G965 chipset Mobo: Rs 5000
Speakers+KB+Mouse: Rs 1500

Total Hardware cost: Rs 34,000

IMO, for Rs 50,000, you can get a decent gfx and sound cards plus some good 5.1 speakers.

You know we are always concerned about choosing the right PC for our desktop, but do we ever take the time to choose the right desktop for our PCs?

I mean you have to make sure that the desktop has enough room to store the PC, and also room for papers etc.

Good Luck

Mark

Double your RAM! Seriously, 2GB would be just about enough if you want to run a decent development environment - say Eclipse, WebSphere and Oracle XE!

And make sure you get a HD that does 7200RPM. You might also want to get something larger, like 320GB or 500GB, but I guess its not that important as you can always add more hard disks later.

I would suggest an AMD 64 X2 processor with 1 GB RAM, 160GB hard disk and a geForce graphics card (You can get a good one for as low as 6000 INR ~ 120$ ). For development of applications, 1 GB of RAM should be enough. That is of course dependant on your environment. If you want to host a couple of services apart from running the IDE you need 2 GB of RAM atleast. Go for a configuration that pleases you, and works best for you. After all our tastes are different.
