If I recall the German I learnt in school correctly, "J' is pronounced as "Y". (Jakob would be Yakob)
So how do the Germans say Java? Is it "Yava"?

Explain what?

Did you notice the the post you mentioned has a date of May 24? Did you notice today is 16 Jun? Did you notice the poster in your link is called Mastermind and I am called Maneesh? Did you notice that Mastermind's profile says, he is from Germany? Did you notice his profile says he is a ASP .NET developer?

It's so obvious that you're wrong that there's no need to explain anything. Stop trolling.

Troll in meaningless drivel: never thought I'd see the day.

wie sagt man Java auf deutsch, mit Aussprache bitte?

I think it would be Yah vah. Normally the 'v' is pronounced like an 'F' so I'm not sure if they would hold the american pronunciation of the v or not, I think they would. Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. I remember the proper pronunciation of the word baby in german is similar to "bah bee" but the first time I heard a native speaker say the word it was the Americanized "bay bee."

Where did the word Java come from? Not just the computer language, but the word java in general? If it was an American invention I wouldn't be suprised if it is pronounced the same way in Germany that it is in the US. English has been seeping into other languages, much to the dismay of some.

Yes indeed. It's probably 50/50 between people saying it like that, and people pronouncing it like it was English.

It's more like "beh bee". "Bah bee" sounds like how people would pronounce the Barbie doll, and saying "bay bee" would be rare.

Java, the programming language, was named after Java, a slang word for Coffee. I believe, this slang word was, in turn, named after a major source for Coffee -- an island in Indonesia. As for the island of Java, I don't know how it got that name.

Well, I speak Spanish, but I can certainly say that "Java" in German is pronounced "Java".
In Portugese, Italian, French, etc too: read it out loud in your native tongue and you'll hear how's pronounced.

But to be precise, I'm from Uruguay and our "j" sounds more like an "h" (the english one) and we don't really distinguish between the sounds of "b" and "v", so it will more like "haba" but not in the spanish sound, because it will be "aba" (the "h" is silent) and that sounds like "abba" and I saw the "Mamma Mia" movie and I couldn't stand it, so "Java" should be pronounced ALWAYS as "Java".

Ah, so it comes from an island name....I always wondered and was always too lazy to Google it.....You know, the busy social life of a computer programmer and all.

The Oxford English Dictionary also doesn't say anything about where its English name came from, so you are in good company! And they don't have any citations before about 1850, which is odd considering English-speaking people were going there long before that.

Does that translate to(word to word):

How say <xxx> Java of german, me tell please?

Did ich verstehen it correctly?

@Monu Tripathi:
No, it translates more to: "How do you say Java in German, with pronunciation please".

[edit]
@all
Under http://www.dict.cc/?s=java you'll find sound files for English and German (even though the german sound-file sounds a bit funny) where you can here the difference.

@Chetan: Hm, sounds like at least one of us is misinterpreting what Paul meant by that post.

@Paul: not exactly a new phenomenon, I think. Though I guess it's good that it might seem that way. MD has changed a bit since its inception.

Where is the fun in looking at the answer directly? Isn't it always better to try on your own first? (ahem!)

Like the Dutch!

The Indonesians pronounce it like Jawa. The Dutch could not pronounce that so made is Java. Which would in English letters be something like Yaah Fa.

Java is part of the former Dutch overseas region Nederlands Indie (The Dutch Indies).

So does this mean that if "J"s sound like "Y"s that you should really make sure you are understanding a job applicant when they say they just got out of Yale.

Yep, those "Get out of Yale (debt) free" cards are pretty popular...
