Hi everyone,

I'm starting my preparation for the exam and I would like to know your experiences with the SCJP. I'm concerned about how long it will take me to go through the K & B book plus practicing for the exam. I know this depends on how much time you can spend on it and it also depends on how skillful you are. I just would like to know an estimation 'average' time needed for this test considering at least you have a basic Java knowledge.

Take care .

Hi Alex welcome to javaranch.

The average time is about 2-3 months...

Like you said...it depends on how gud is your understanding of Java. On an average, I would say, 3 months should be more than enough.
Practice K&b book thoroughly and if you have the patience and energy, try going through the Rolf Rasmussen book as well.
Do as many mocks as possible. The ones I did was KB book, Rolf rassmussen exercises, devakas lab simulator which was awesome and whizlabs.
All this should be more than enough if you practice them thoroughly and try understanding the concepts from the grass-root level.
All the best.

I would say 2-3 months. It depends on your experience, and the time that you have to devote on the exam

I have to admit so far it has already taken me longer than 3 months.

This comes from somebody who never programmed before and took up Java as a first language.

I guess 2-3 months is for people that have already programmed in Java or are fluent in other OO languages such as C++?

If not I'll go and cry in the corner now

I can imagine how tough it would be to start without any programming knowledge. IMHO, if I were totally new to programming and wanted to get the certificate I would start with some basic Java book with lots of exercises to practice. After that I would go for the K & B book for preparing the SCJP exam. Again, unless you are really good, sure it's gonna take you longer than 3 months... so don't worry about it.

Good luck!

I think we need 2-3 months.

At least before the exam, we need to go over all chapters several times and summary the test points.

When you see a quesiton, you know what the question is testing, you win.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
