Recognisable... I'm sometimes amazed at how my girlfriend jumps from one subject to another which seemingly doesn't have anything to do with it.

But seriously, its dangerous waters to suggest differences in brains due to gender even with scientific evidence.
I seem to remember some President of an Ivy League school making such a suggestion then on that basis alone came within a hairsbreadth of being forced to resign.

You're thinking of Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers. He wasn't citing scientific evidence, he cited his experience with his daughter, who, when given two trucks, decided one was a "daddy" and one was a "baby" (presumably, something a boy would not do).
It is not dangerous to suggest that men and women are different. They are. Anyone who would claim differently needs to have their eyes checked.

Of course men and women are different. When I need something heavy lifted, who do you think I ask?

I thought it was funny.

The world would be boring if men and women were identical. We wouldn't need books like Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus (and similar) to help us try to understand each other.

It is dangerous for one's career:

"Summers apologized repeatedly, and Slate's William Saletan argues that, despite the controversy, most of Summers' initial comments during his lecture were supported by reliable research and additionally that "Summers is being forced to apologize, in the style of a Communist show trial."

The controversy contributed to his resigning his position as president of Harvard University the following year, and David Usborne of The Independent asserted that the incident cost Summers the job of Treasury Secretary in Obama's administration."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Summers

Academia and governmental positions have narrow defintions of what is acceptable to think or say (i.e. political correctness).
Gender differences are an especially tricky minefield when it comes to what is permissable to think openly about, as Summers found out to his regret.

Summers sure landed on his feet (from Wikipedia):

On October 19, 2006, he became a part-time managing director of the investment and technology development firm D. E. Shaw & Co. He was paid $5.2 million in his second of two years working there, while working just one day a week

He's currently director of the White House National Economic Council. Tell me how I can damage my career that bad!

Well, logically, it is bad for your career if your career is ended - his career in academia was ended.
That he found another line of work was fortunate for him, but I imagine most people will not be so lucky when changing careers mid-life after being fired.
