Have you tried walking through your code on paper to see what it's actually doing?

I mean step through your code: pretend you're the JVM. You must have a basic idea of how you want the code to work--does the code you wrote match up with that expectation?

Hint: no, but it'll crash before it even gets that far since you're trying to store values into a null array reference.

BUT IS MY REST OF THE LOGIC CORRECT EXCLUDING NULL REFERENCE???

How many elements does array "a" have? And how many times is the loop body executed, with which values for "i"? That's problem #1.

But there's a problem #2: The loop body doesn't just access element "i" of the array, it also accesses element "i+1".
