I know absolutely nothing about struts. Is your book appropriate fotr someone like me? do struts provide useful features outside of web apps (like swing)?

Mike,
If you know what a J2EE web application is and how to build and deploy a web application, then you can learn Struts from this book.
Answer to your second question: Struts cannot be used for Swing based applications.

Swing is client-based tech and Struts is server-side tech... So they can not be friends...
