Either my Google skills suck, or such a thing is a myth...

I want to buy some sort of so-called "heat engine". Examples of heat engines are steam engines and stirling engines.

I don't want plans, I don't want toys...

I want something in the 1 - 10 hp range.

Anyone got any ideas?

aren't MOST engines heat engines? Unless i misunderstand, an internal combustion engine or a jet engine are both heat engines.

From the wikipedia:

A heat engine is a physical device that converts thermal energy to mechanical output.

So I think those would both qualify.

Okay Fred, for you let's say specifically either a steam engine or a stirling engine - no internal combustion!

Yeah, the greensteamengine is fun - but again, it's plans only... I don't want to build one, I want to buy one

You might do better on the forums here. That site also has links to commercial stirling engines, including a company in New Zeland, although all those looked much larger than what you're asking for.

I bet WhisperGen is the company from New Zealand.
They have an small "Off Grid" Stirling Generator. But it's not cheap.

Honda is working on a "Cogeneration Unit". The article is old. Maybe it's ready yet.

@Maneesh
I think he is really talking about a heat engine and not just a miniature one. But that link was really worth a see.

@Bert.
The green steam engine project does have a quote on their home page saying

Complete Engines Available For Purchase

For information about purchasing complete engines, send an email to: rgreen999@comline.

FYI
I just found out that the large Whispergen heat engine is available in Europe now. It's powered with natural gas.
