Another newbie JSF question on user authentication

I am trying to acquire the userID value in my bean below to display on my webpage. I am working in Eclipse and when I put a breakpoint in my bean I never get there so I'm assuming that the code in my JSP page to utilize the bean is NOT ever executing but don't know why.

Here is the code I'm using and any help/direction would be greatly appreciated:

I also tried changing the authenticate method above in my bean to authenticate the following but still getting a NULL value:

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
