Please be sure to ask Struts questions in the Struts forum. I have moved this post there for you.

Except that you don't retrieve data using Struts; Struts is a web application framework and is not directly related to the database at all (except for the long-deprecated datasource configuration element that you shouldn't use).

So the question really is are you going to use JDBC? Hibernate or other ORM? Spring?

When was datasource deprecated?
What do you use in it's place now?

It was deprecated after Struts 1.1. You'd use any of the normal data source methods, like JNDI, Spring, etc.

Doesn't Spring also use a datasource? Or are you saying just datasource for struts is deprecated?

Sorry if my questions are noob...i'm new to java.

The datasource element in the old Struts 1 configuration file is deprecated. The term "data source" is generic and used all over the place.
