Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are, IMHO, awesome. They are holding "opposing rallies" in the next week or two. Given that Colbert lampoons conservatives like Bill O'Reilly I can't stop laughing over the name of his rally: "Keep Fear Alive"

. Looking forward to it. And the next week of shows preparing/hyping.

I think it is really cool that the "real" media are covering it. I read somewhere that Comedy Central has their own camera area and all the other networks have to share a pool.

Two days to "Rally to restore sanity and/or fear". And tomorrow is Friday. Looking forward to coming home and seeing what comments are in this thread.

Hey, the rally was a top story in the 7pm news here in Germany. At least 4 minutes with a correspondent and interviews.

Cool. I just got home so I'm going to watch the 3 hours "show" now.

Just watched video of 5am at CitiField with 10K people waiting for Huffington Post bus from NY to DC. Nice media event by a media company.

What stood out for me

Preshow:
  • a lot of music - nice.
  • Seeing the wave (one time) was cool from an aerial view with a sea of people. Then they milked it for too much time.
  • Then the pre-show warm up for Stewart got weirder - everybody jump!

  • Actual show:
  • more music - and no commercials
  • Stewart showed up
  • Colbert from the "fear bunker"; nice link to Thursday's night personification of fears
  • Colbert: "Mostly I'm afraid that nobody showed up to our rally"
  • Chi-le coming up from bunker
  • JetBlue Steven Slater bit
  • medals for reasonableness
  • American flag costume bit by Stewart and Colbert
  • Mr Zuckerberg [Facebook] couldn't be here today because he respects his privacy more than he follows yours.
  • Stewart & Colbert debate with podiums.
  • Colbert: "boogeyman, where?!"
  • Stewart: there is "corbomite" in bottled water
  • and R2D2 is not a scary robot. Even showed up on stage! So cute!
  • Colbert: "Your reasonableness is poisoning my fear."
  • Fear-zilla - giant paper mache puppet of Colbert

Last night, the news said they estimated 60 thousand people in attendance. Now the estimate is 215 thousand.

I was going to post that 60 thousand seems too low. Huffington Post had about 250 buses/10,000 people from NYC alone. I found it hard to believe that those buses were a sixth of the audience so relieved to see the more up to date numbers.

I heard a similar self-referencial or recursive statistic that Glenn Beck estimated 75k attendees when everyone else was saying at least 200k. So even the attendance gets a spin-job - jees.

Yeah. The odd thing was I didn't hear the 60K figure on a conservative channel/show.

I think par tof it was that Stewart/Colbert weren't giving figures either. Of course, they get the luxury of joking about milliions.

The National Park Service, who run the Mall and provide police, permits, etc. used to give "official" estimates of attendance. But like nearly everything else in Washington, it got too political. If a march/rally had low turnout, does it mean that no one supports the cause, pro-gun, anti-matter, etc.? So the Park Service simply stopped counting, since no one was happy with their numbers.

The only real measures are the number of port-a-potties that are brought in, and how "well used" they are after. Those give statistics that you can rely upon.

    Pat,
    Interesting.

My favorite signs people hat at the rally as written in my local newspaper:
  • I'm a tea bagger [with the person dressed as a tea bag; leaving out the more political parts of the sign; it is cute on its own right]
  • Meh!
  • Vote for whoever you want to
  • The rent is moderately high [in NY we have someone running on "the rent is too damn high" party]

In NYC, the rent is always too high, unless you have a great aunt whose 1943 rent has been controlled since then.

Best local stats are a bit over 200,000 attendees. The traffic on the Metro (DC subway) is another good proxy. Numbers of 230K or so seem to have backup, anything much higher than that are just spin.

I saw the "I'm More American" song but if you see more videos of the good bits online, post a link!

At least the reporter didn't ask them to find the country of Keynsia on a map.

Since its become an issue, I have noticed that the racial composition of that rally was similar to the Tea Party rallies, only difference being that in this case no one in media is making an issue of it....
