As part of the high school US First robotics competition, some locations held practice scrimmages today. The robots must be bagged/shipped Tuesday so this was the time to see what happened. I didn't go, but some video is online. Here's one:

Donut analogies welcome .

My buddy is mentoring a team doing this. But I don't think they are quite ready. Sure, the shipping deadline is early tomorrow, but I think some traditional software development practices are in store -- i.e. an all nighter.

Made the deadline. Now to wait two weeks to compete in the regional competition!

Did your team need an all-nighter? I was wondering how the parents of high school kids would handle a real all-nighter. I never did any in high school, but as a theater geek, we did many nights before a show that went solidly to midnight.

No. The school isn't open all night. We met until 10pm for the last two weeks though.

Personally, I'm a proponent of rested people getting more done. Started a new thread on all nighters.

You might find my blog post today interesting. It's my take on the robotics library pros/cons. And one ANNOYING bug!

This is DESDroid; the robot built by the team I've been mentoring. You can't see the software so this will have to do .

What language did you use to program the robot's control? Apparently, Java is supported
http://first.wpi.edu/FRC/frcjava.html

Did your team go for the Mecanum drive? That looks to need a lot of software for proper control.

Yes, Java. They used Java last year for the first time which is when I started volunteering as a mentor. I didn't know anything about robotics last year so I was able to mentor programming while I learned about the domain. Still learning but I know some.

Yes, we went with mecanum and yes there is a lot of software.

Check it out. The ranch is a "sponsor" of a robotics team. They list the companies of mentors and I put the ranch's name down.
