html:messages not working, but request attribute is present

In my JSP page, I'm not able to get the error message printed using <html:messages> tag. However, I tried printing the value of the ACTION_MESSAGE request attribute and it is printing correctly.
Please advice.

can you tell me what are you doing in your action class method?
How are you setting your error messages?
