There is a section on the JBoss Cache in the book. That section was written by my coauthor; I'm not sure if it answers your question - while it has an example configuration with maxNodes specified, the text doesn't discuss it.
Also, what kinds of POJOs are you caching? If POJO A reference B, which reference C which references... then caching A actually caches a lot of objects. As an extreme example, caching a few XML DOM objects would pretty much fill up the heap.
