Hi

I am a software developer with 4+ years of experience in JAVA J2EE development. I am presented with an opportunity to work on SDL Tridion development using .Net C#.
Although I have no hesitation in learning C#, I am confused if it will be a good career move. I have been told that SDL Tridion development is a niche skill to have. Any advices please?

Is a Shift from java to .net a good shift from a career/future growth perspective? Cosidering I already have 4 years experience in java technologies
SDL Tridion development - is it a very good option to consider this move? How does it aid career growth?
will it be easy to move back to java again in future if I want?

Thank you.

I've never heard of SDL Tridion so it is a specialized skill. Getting experience with .NET will help broaden your skillset. It's always nice to learn new things at the employers expense. It won't help get a "Java job". But it won't hurt if you only stay a year or two. And maybe your next job will be .NET or Ruby or something else.

Always consider the source when someone tells you this. Is it the person trying to convince you to take the job, or is it from someone who doesn't have an interest in your career?

I would be much more willing to believe it if it were the latter than the former...That doesn't mean the person telling you is WRONG, but I would question it a little more.

just my 2 cents.

Well said Fred. Although in this case it is pretty neutral advice. I'm sure folks could have a whole debate about whether it is a good skill to ahve. Niche can be great or horrible or anywhere in between.
