In designer we have 2 start event 'startEvent' and 'alfrescoStartEvent' . What is the difference between them ? However I tried both in my Alfresco workflow both worked for me.

Yes, both will work and are quite similar. In the Activiti Designer you'll have a drop down with predefined form keys that you can use for the alfresco start event.
With the normal start event you would need to type the form key yourself. That's actually the main difference. For Alfresco workflows I would advise to always use the Alfresco start event.

Best regards,
