Stupid, stupid name, but I guess they were running out of cats.

But the under-the-cover improvements alone have me all excited.

And one of the user-visible features that I'm going make great use of is being able to AirPlay an extra display to my AppleTV.

Other random musings:

  • iCloud keychain is likely to replace 1Password
  • iWork in the browser will be fantastically useful
  • Maps! Finally!
  • Compressed memory instead of disk-paging is going to be brilliant

  • I still don't think I'll ever be able to say "OS X Mavericks" with a straight face

Unfortunately, the term "mavericks" doesn't conjure up a sports team for me, but rather a thankfully unsuccessful team of presidential contenders...

Shoot, I still haven't learned all the new features of Mountain Lion. I can't keep up!

They haven't used Ocelot yet, have they? There's a pretty big overlap in the Mac Fanboy community, and the Love Me An Ocelot (LMAO) community. This is bound to cause some backlash. Sometimes Apple just seems intentionally tone deaf! In any case, if Maverick isn't just a one-off, what else fits with the theme. Other NBA teams? Top Gun call signs? Slogans of failed presidential campaigns?

ETA: aw, Bear beat me to it! I wasted ten minutes looking up slogans of other failed presidential campaigns, and couldn't find any that were funny / would work as OS X nicknames.

    However, my favorites were:
1884 James Blaine: Ma, Ma, Where’s my Pa, Gone to the White House, Ha, Ha, Ha
1884 Grover Cleveland: Blaine, Blaine, James G. Blaine, The Continental Liar from the State of Maine

Will we ever recapture that level of poetry in another run for the White House?

I'm not sure if saving credentials in the cloud is a good thing (not to forget the hot PRISM topic in the US).
Also, what is wrong with this cat any way? http://i.imgur.com/pzY0k.jpg

I already use 1Password and I'm comfortable enough with it.

And, "Grumpy Cat" is likely to be trademarked at some point.

On Twitter, people were really upset with iOS 7 icons and theme.
Some are saying that Apple is copying Windows 8 Mobile UI, Pandora and Rdio.
Well any way, I'm going to upgrade to iOS 7 once it is out!

In other words, the usual gripes and complaints.

I'm a lot less concerned with how things look (though I think there are some nice improvements, and the ditching of the out-dated skeuomorphisms is welcome) than the under-the-hood improvements which look to be vast.

But this isn't a topic about iOS 7, but OS X.

its an interesting idea to name the OS after places that inspired them though.

Contrary to many reports in the tech press, OS-X has very little to do with IOS for any versions. And I'm glad. iOS has reasonable engineering restrictions for an embedded device. My $3000 MacBook Pro Retina ain't an embedded device, thank you very much.
