This code does not display a simple.php page if correct account were entered. i think there is a session login problem
<?php session_start(); $_SESSION['userid']; $_SESSION['username']; ?> <body> Welcoome user $_SESSION['username']; <h2>Current User Session</h2> <?=$_SESSION['username']?> (ID = <?=$_SESSION['userid']?> ) </body> </html>
<?php session_start(); $host="localhost"; // Host name $username="root"; // Mysql username $password=""; // Mysql password $db_name="timeline"; // Database name $tbl_name="users"; // Table name // Connect to server and select databse. mysql_connect("$host", "$username", "$password")or die("cannot connect"); mysql_select_db("$db_name")or die("cannot select DB"); // username and password sent from form $username=$_POST['username']; $password=$_POST['password']; // To protect MySQL injection (more detail about MySQL injection) $username = stripslashes($username); $password = stripslashes($password); $username = mysql_real_escape_string($username); $password = mysql_real_escape_string($password); $sql="SELECT * FROM $tbl_name WHERE username='$username' and password='$password'"; $result=mysql_query($sql); // Mysql_num_row is counting table row $count=mysql_num_rows($result); // If result matched $myusername and $mypassword, table row must be 1 row if($count==1){ $member = mysql_fetch_assoc($result); $_SESSION['userid']; $_SESSION['user_name']; header("location: simple.php"); } else { echo "Wrong Username or Password"; } ?>

There is no session problem. Simply you are not assigning value to Session variables.
Look at your code
if($count==1){ $member = mysql_fetch_assoc($result); $_SESSION['userid']; $_SESSION['user_name']; header("location: simple.php"); }
should be
if($count==1){ $member = mysql_fetch_assoc($result); $_SESSION['userid'] = $member['user_id']; $_SESSION['user_name'] = $member['user_name']; header("location: simple.php"); }

You are creating session but not assigning the value to session variable that`s the problem.
And place exit; just after the header();
