Ok, So let us assume you've worked for a few years - say about 4-5 years or more. Sort of like you've always been employed - right after you graduated ( may be even before that ). And you've never had those two to three months all to yourself.. when you could say go on a long vacation, attend to your personal life, be a part of a major family event, design your own house, undertake some other creative assignments and stuff.. And you aren't really happy at your current workplace ( say you don't enjoy what you're working on currently at your workplace so much - so besides a pay check you wouldn't be losing much if you decided to quit ).

So do such breaks affect your career in the long run? What are your thoughts?

Chan.

Short breaks (say 2-3 months) between jobs can be defendable during interviews. Longer than that you really need a good reason. Because the longer the period, companies tend to think you are not interested in working/ looking for job ... and all of a sudden start looking. If you think blaming the (poor) job market during these long months, don't because of several possible reasons: eg you demand too high, your skill set is not what the market looking for, you looking for jobs that you are not qualified but you think you do qualify.
