In my web app I use the following to get the user id and machine name for use in the app. This is an intranet web application. Is there a better way to do this and get it on the server side?

So all the computers on your Intranet run Windows !

This sort of 'Big Brother' requirement seems very common at the moment. I wonder why?

Yes it is windows.

I can get System.getenv() to work when I run the app on local host but returns null when deployed to application server.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
