Project Looking Glass (lg3d) is one of them. They plan on using it in their
Java Desktop System and Solaris. They say that they open sourced this project in particular to spawn creativity and let lots of people explore this technology. While I'm sure this is partly true, it seems to me it's a good way to get free software. Sun is not the only big company doing this. IBM has Eclipse, and while I do like Eclipse and I'm glad it's open source, I still believe that these companies have other motives besides just "giving back to the community."
