So can someone tell me how Sun can make a project open source, not have anyone from Sun working on the project, then incorporate it back into their own sellable product. They will make money on this product that they didn't even create. How is this legal or ethical? The guys that contribute to the open source project will get nothing.

If the license of the open source product doesn't preclude it from being used in a non open source product (such as the GPL does), why should they not?

What project are you talking about?

Project Looking Glass (lg3d) is one of them. They plan on using it in their Java Desktop System and Solaris. They say that they open sourced this project in particular to spawn creativity and let lots of people explore this technology. While I'm sure this is partly true, it seems to me it's a good way to get free software. Sun is not the only big company doing this. IBM has Eclipse, and while I do like Eclipse and I'm glad it's open source, I still believe that these companies have other motives besides just "giving back to the community."

Of course they have! So what do you think is unethical about it?
